Color Guard is a mixed gender team of performers who perform choreographed routines with various equipment to enhance the musical performance of the marching band. They use a variety of apparatus including flags, fake rifles, sabres, and other props. These performers truly enhance the meaning, feeling, and connection to the show for the audience. The HSE HS Guard Program has two separate opportunities for students to participate on our Color Guard teams – Marching Band and Winter Guard.
Color Guard
The HSE HS Marching Band, Royal Command & Guard, fields a full Color Guard team that complements our musicians enhancing the creative and visual aspect of the fall marching band show.
As part of the marching band, they will perform at all related competitions and home football games. During marching band competitions, the Guard adds to the overall score of the band by scoring that evaluates many categories including visual effects, overall effects, auxiliary, and more.
Indoor Winter Guard
Winter Guard is an indoor activity that is a spin off from the fall marching band season with a season that runs from November through April. Rather than perform outdoors on a football field, Winter Guard takes place indoors in a gymnasium. Winter Guard performs to a pre-recorded selection of music using dance and employs various pieces of equipment including flags, rifles, and sabres.
Hamilton Southeastern High School has a competitive Varsity Guard and Junior Varsity performance team for this activity. Students will audition and be placed on one of these teams accordingly based on their level of experience and skill. The practice calendar for the two activities are different with Varsity having a much more robust schedule.
HSE HS Winter Guard is sanctioned by the Indiana High School Color Guard Association (IHSCGA) and Winter Guard International (WGI).
